Take a dozen children, 2 kilograms of corn starch, green food colouring and copious amounts of water and what do you have?
A MESSY CHURCH!
From slimy, oozy fun to getting all tied up in knots, the first Teeswater United Church ‘Messy Church’ was a big hit!
The first Messy Church began in 2004 when a group at St Wilfrid’s in Cowplain near Portsmouth, England were frustrated because, as a church, they were hardly reaching any children in the community with God’s story.
The group at St Wilfrid’s decided very early on to try to do something for all ages together, partly out of a belief that you grow best as a church when you walk the journey with as many different people as possible, and partly from a desire to help families grow together in their walk of faith, to not see Christianity as something you grow out of when you’re eleven.
And as they ...

From Jeff Moser, Principal, Hillcrest Central School:
Learning to read is a process. When a child learns to walk, he goes through certain stages from crawling to standing and, finally, to his first step. Learning to read is a similar process – learning is done through stages.
Just as you helped your child to talk and walk, there are ways you can help your child read. To help your child move smoothly through the stages, the key is to give them the right kind of support at the right time.
Just like a house requires a solid foundation, there are certain things your child needs to be able to do in order to learn how to read. These include:

learning the letters of the alphabet
learning sounds letters make
learning how books “work” – for example, books are read from left to right, front to back

Try sounding out words with your child, focus on the positive. ...

Can you imagine – on Monday Queen Elizabeth II will have been on the throne 60 YEARS?
In a reign that is the second longest in British history (she needs three more years on the throne to surpass Queen Victoria), she has seen 12 American Presidents elected, ruled as constitutional monarch of 16 countries (of the 54 in the Commonwealth), headed one of the major churches of the world, and on those rare ‘days off’ must have walked at least half the world’s population of Corgis!
There was a time when i wondered aloud whether we actually need a monarch sitting on the throne of England signing into law measures that will affect the health and well-being of Inuit in Tuktoyaktuk. Do we really need this often stern looking woman peeking out every time we open up our wallet to buy a 24 ounce Timmy’s double-double? Do we need to subsidize young ...

The Internet can be an amazing place, informing, educating, entertaining and connecting.
The last part is perhaps the most important – the Internet has the ability to connect people, across borders, time zones, ethnic and political backgrounds. But it is this ability to connect that creates the biggest need for responsibility.
How many times have you received an email from a friend / relative / possibly even a stranger that talks about how ‘easy’ immigrants have it in this country?
You know the email – how immigrants come here because of our easy social system that gives them instant medical / dental / welfare cheques without requiring them to become ‘Canadian’. Even worse these emails often allude to a particular group or news event such as the ongoing issue of whether people can wear a burka for religious reasons when having their driver’s license picture taken. *GASP* – The Bounders!!
Usually we just delete ...

As many know, Teeswater has been missing its Nativity Scene on the Town Hall lawn for the past two Christmas seasons. While much has been made of the ‘why’ the Nativity Scene ‘disappeared’, a committee has been formed to replace the figurines and recapture some of our traditional local Christmas ‘magic’!
To date members of the community have already come forward to donate the materials and create a new wagon and barn, which was placed on the Town Hall lawn this past season.
Working under the auspices of the Teeswater Agricultural Society (who will be storing the new Nativity Scene and insuring it!), the committee is now asking for broader community support to raise the funds necessary to replace the figurines. Unfortunately there is no Canadian distributor and these figurines will need to be ordered from Bronners of Frankenmuth, Michigan (where the original set was purchased).
As the following figures show, the price ...

Maybe Wiarton Willie and 11 of his pals are right – an early spring they say – not a shadow seen from Aurora Colorado (Stormy Marmot) to Lilburn Georgia (General Beauregard Lee).
But it is still Groundhog Day, the day when just about anything can happen – and keep happening – just ask Bill Murray in the eponymous movie ‘ Groundhog Day‘.
In our house 2-dash-2 started off with the Boss trying to download a book from the library to her Kobo, something she has done a scabillion times (great service by the way if you have a Kobo / iPad / Kindle etc.!). No luck today though, seems the computer system at Bruce County Library System saw a shadow and retreated into some cyber-burrow for another 6 weeks.
‘Account deactivated’, it said.
Thankfully Teeswater Library still has REAL people working on the desk so a quick call confirmed it was indeed the system ...

How well do you know the Internet?

Question: What is the #1 service on the Internet?
Question: From what country did the infamous ‘Nigerian Oil Wells’ email scam come?
Question: Name two of the worst offending countries when it comes to viruses?
Question: What’s the fastest way to do a reverse lookup on a telephone number?
Question: What’s the difference between a ‘Profile’ and a ‘Timeline’ and where do you find them?

If you can answer all five questions correctly (answers at the bottom), then you are ALMOST ready to use the Internet safely and effectively.
Come along to Teeswater United Church on Tuesday, February 7th for three hours of information about the Internet you might NEVER find on Google. With almost 20 years of experience on the Net, Mark Law will show you tips on how to Stay Safe and Play Safe on the ‘Net.
Covering the vital areas of Email, Web Browsing and Social Networks, be ...

Leap Year is the legendary time when women can feel free to pop the question to their men.
It is an Irish legend that tells us St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women were having to wait far too long for a marriage proposal.
So he proclaimed February 29 as the day women could get down on one knee and ask a man to pledge his love eternal.
Since the opportunity only comes around every four years, the Saint built in a strategy for the possibility a guy may say no.
Rather than be rejected and dejected, reports The Telegraph.co.uk, “He also decreed … that if turned down, the woman should extract a fine from the man or be given a beautiful garment of some kind.”
So there you have it ladies. Ask … and ye shall receive. If not an engagement ring, the guy will have to get you something for your efforts.
February ...

Last night the ‘Reach Out and Learn’ continuing education program kicked off at Teeswater United Church!
A co-project between Teeswater United Church and indigoblues.ca, Reach Out and Learn aims to fill the adult education / continuing education gap in Teeswater and area.
The first evening seminar, titled ‘The Technology Survival Guide’ was three hours of information on how to pick the best computer for your needs and take care of it so that it works for YOU for years to come. The evening was filled with information, sometimes simple ideas we never think of, that will keep you out of technology traps that end up costing you an arm and a leg. And from the nods and smiles at the seminar we all have ‘been there – done that’ before!
