From Jeff Moser, Principal, Hillcrest Central School:
Learning to read is a process. When a child learns to walk, he goes through certain stages from crawling to standing and, finally, to his first step. Learning to read is a similar process – learning is done through stages.
Just as you helped your child to talk and walk, there are ways you can help your child read. To help your child move smoothly through the stages, the key is to give them the right kind of support at the right time.
Just like a house requires a solid foundation, there are certain things your child needs to be able to do in order to learn how to read. These include:

learning the letters of the alphabet
learning sounds letters make
learning how books “work” – for example, books are read from left to right, front to back

Try sounding out words with your child, focus on the positive. ...

Happy New Year!
I hope everyone is settled in after the first week back from holidays.
2012 marks the completion of my first year as school board trustee. It has been a very interesting year and at times the learning curve was steep. However, after attending over 100 meetings/events and logging thousands of hours, I hope I am now up to speed! It has certainly been an eye opener in regards to not only the complexity but also the personal time commitment. I was very fortunate to have an understanding family and employer as I would be out 3-4 times a week. I certainly have a renewed respect for volunteers and all the background work involved in making our school board run smoothly
I have thoroughly enjoyed making acquaintances with not only the schools in my constituency but also enjoyed meeting students and staff from other schools as well. There is nothing more ...

From Jeff Moser – Principal:
I would personally like to wish you a Happy New Year! Over the holidays I had the fortune to be able to spend some quality time with my family as well as read. I look forward to the second term of school, with many exciting and new educational experiences awaiting students.
Reading is a gift that we all value. With January 27th being National Family Literacy Day, I invite you to continue to acquire interesting books for your children and make it a require routine with your family to sit down and read. Reading at the same time or together and verbally sharing interesting pieces from the book(s) you are reading helps children form ideas, connect with the events of the texts, analyze, visualize or evoke emotions. The gift of a book, the ability to read and critically think can unlock many doors and make futures brighter ...

From Jeff Moser, Principal:
The holiday season is a wonderful time to take a moment to spend some time with family, relatives or friends. It is a time to put the busy world on pause and spend some quality time with others. Whether you take some time to help others in need throughout the season, maybe at a soup kitchen, spending time with elders at a retirement home, delivering meals to homeless, or some small act of kindness which give us a sense of the holiday spirit. Many say there’s no other holiday quite like it. It is a time for families and or friends to reunite and be grateful for all that they have.
I personally wish everyone a safe and happy holiday! We look forward to your return to embark on the next part of our learning journey!

Let’s Learn Kindergarten Registration – Thursday, October 6, 2011 – 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Hillcrest Central School Library
If you have a three-year old (born in 2008) please plan to attend with them. If you know someone who has a three-year old, please share this information with them. Parents are encouraged to call ahead for an appointment. We will send out a package in advance. We are hoping to see all of our 2012 kindergarten students and their parents at this important event. Your participation in early registration helps us to plan for your child’s successful future school experience.
It is important for students to develop good habits when they are young. One excellent habit that will follow your child for the rest of his/her life is that of reading. Please encourage your child to spend time reading on a daily basis. This ...

A message from Jeff Moser, Principal:
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. I am pleased to be the Principal at Hillcrest Central School.
The staff and I look forward to working with the students, parents, and community to provide the best learning experience possible for each and every student. As well we extend a warm welcome this year to both returning families and our new families who are joining the Hillcrest Central school community. As partners in your child(s) education the staff and I look forward to working together with you in the education and well being of each student.
Over the summer the custodial staff worked diligently to make sure the school was ready for the first day. Things are looking very shiny and fresh as we begin the year. We would like to thank them for all their hard work. As well, Mrs. Fleet for all her hard work in getting ...

From Dan Wong:
Hello everyone!
Hope all is well and everyone is settling into a new and exciting new school year. It had been a very busy few months prior to heading into summer holidays. The Hanover/Chesley and Kincardine/Port Elgin Accommodation Reviews resulted in many meetings for input and discussions. Trustees will be making the final decision at the October 18th Board Meeting. Some positive news for the ARC Review is a recently announced Revised Capital Benchmarks from the Ministry. The Ministry has increased the elementary and secondary capital funding for capital additions and replacement schools by 4%. This means that previous projected models for ARC review schools may be built larger than previously budgeted for. On that note, the new Walkerton JK-12 school is coming along nicely and we will look forward to move in students in early 2012. We also tackled the $4.0+ million dollar deficit Budget and were able ...

Messages from Principal Jeff Moser:
As we move towards summer, I hope every family has the opportunity to get away and spend some quality time together. The outdoors is a wonderful place for children to learn and create a calming environment for reading. Encourage your children to be creative in their play and take the time to talk about the many connections between life and nature. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer!
Effective this September there will only be 3 buses servicing Hillcrest and Sacred Heart schools. The Students Transportation Service Consortium of Grey Bruce in cooperation with Montgomery Bus Lines have eliminated one school bus route. With the elimination of one bus route some students will see a change in pick-up and drop-off times next year. However, many students will see the times change only by a few minutes or remain the same. The three “new” routes will ...
