From slimy, oozy fun to getting all tied up in knots, the first Teeswater United Church ‘Messy Church’ was a big hit!
The first Messy Church began in 2004 when a group at St Wilfrid’s in Cowplain near Portsmouth, England were frustrated because, as a church, they were hardly reaching any children in the community with God’s story.
The group at St Wilfrid’s decided very early on to try to do something for all ages together, partly out of a belief that you grow best as a church when you walk the journey with as many different people as possible, and partly from a desire to help families grow together in their walk of faith, to not see Christianity as something you grow out of when you’re eleven.
And as they ...

From Jeff Moser, Principal, Hillcrest Central School:
Learning to read is a process. When a child learns to walk, he goes through certain stages from crawling to standing and, finally, to his first step. Learning to read is a similar process – learning is done through stages.
Just as you helped your child to talk and walk, there are ways you can help your child read. To help your child move smoothly through the stages, the key is to give them the right kind of support at the right time.
Just like a house requires a solid foundation, there are certain things your child needs to be able to do in order to learn how to read. These include:

learning the letters of the alphabet
learning sounds letters make
learning how books “work” – for example, books are read from left to right, front to back

Try sounding out words with your child, focus on the positive. ...

As many know, Teeswater has been missing its Nativity Scene on the Town Hall lawn for the past two Christmas seasons. While much has been made of the ‘why’ the Nativity Scene ‘disappeared’, a committee has been formed to replace the figurines and recapture some of our traditional local Christmas ‘magic’!
To date members of the community have already come forward to donate the materials and create a new wagon and barn, which was placed on the Town Hall lawn this past season.
Working under the auspices of the Teeswater Agricultural Society (who will be storing the new Nativity Scene and insuring it!), the committee is now asking for broader community support to raise the funds necessary to replace the figurines. Unfortunately there is no Canadian distributor and these figurines will need to be ordered from Bronners of Frankenmuth, Michigan (where the original set was purchased).
As the following figures show, the price ...

Last night the ‘Reach Out and Learn’ continuing education program kicked off at Teeswater United Church!
A co-project between Teeswater United Church and indigoblues.ca, Reach Out and Learn aims to fill the adult education / continuing education gap in Teeswater and area.
The first evening seminar, titled ‘The Technology Survival Guide’ was three hours of information on how to pick the best computer for your needs and take care of it so that it works for YOU for years to come. The evening was filled with information, sometimes simple ideas we never think of, that will keep you out of technology traps that end up costing you an arm and a leg. And from the nods and smiles at the seminar we all have ‘been there – done that’ before!
The next seminar in the series, ‘All The Software Your Computer will EVER Need – For LESS Than $5′ will take place at ...

Happy New Year!
I hope everyone is settled in after the first week back from holidays.
2012 marks the completion of my first year as school board trustee. It has been a very interesting year and at times the learning curve was steep. However, after attending over 100 meetings/events and logging thousands of hours, I hope I am now up to speed! It has certainly been an eye opener in regards to not only the complexity but also the personal time commitment. I was very fortunate to have an understanding family and employer as I would be out 3-4 times a week. I certainly have a renewed respect for volunteers and all the background work involved in making our school board run smoothly
I have thoroughly enjoyed making acquaintances with not only the schools in my constituency but also enjoyed meeting students and staff from other schools as well. There is nothing more ...

From Jeff Moser – Principal:
I would personally like to wish you a Happy New Year! Over the holidays I had the fortune to be able to spend some quality time with my family as well as read. I look forward to the second term of school, with many exciting and new educational experiences awaiting students.
Reading is a gift that we all value. With January 27th being National Family Literacy Day, I invite you to continue to acquire interesting books for your children and make it a require routine with your family to sit down and read. Reading at the same time or together and verbally sharing interesting pieces from the book(s) you are reading helps children form ideas, connect with the events of the texts, analyze, visualize or evoke emotions. The gift of a book, the ability to read and critically think can unlock many doors and make futures brighter ...
