  • The Race for the Mug Begins!

    Apr
    11
    2011

Lord Stanley's Mug is once again up for grabs, with the first round set to begin in a couple of days. This year we have a dearth of Canadian teams competing for OUR trophy – Vancouver and Montreal – with both having a tough road ahead of them if they plan to sip from the Stanley Cup in June. In the first round Vancouver runs up against longtime nemesis, the Chicago Blackhawks. While the Canucks were President's Cup winners this year and the 'Hawks slid into the playoffs on the last day of the season, all bets are off when these two hit the ice. Even though I am probably a wee bit biased, Vancouver still looks to be too strong and deep for a Hawks team that was basically dismantled after … Read entire article »

    Training Camp Begins!

    Feb
    14
    2011

A new chapter in Blue Jays history begins today, when pitchers and catchers hold their first official workout in Dunedin, Fla. Toronto's Spring Training camp will take on a drastically different look this season, as general manager Alex Anthopoulos made six trades and signed three free agents to Major League contracts during the offseason. Those moves could lead to as many as 13 new faces on the Opening Day roster compared with the team that travelled north a year ago. The big departure this year will be Vernon Wells, traded in the off-season to the Angels. Also departing were Scott Downs (Angels), Shaun Marcum (Brewers), Kevin Gregg (Orioles), John Buck (Marlins) and Lyle Overbay (Pirates). The biggest new arrival is Manager John Farrell, replacing the retiring Cito Gaston. Farrell, a rare former pitcher to … Read entire article »

Reducing Hockey Violence – In The Stands!

    Oct
    16
    2010

I may not be the quietest hockey fan on the planet, but nothing is scarier at the arena than an irate hockey parent! Now it seems Hockey Calgary is putting some teeth into stopping hockey parent shenanigans. Sometime back Hockey Calgary created a voluntary online course for hockey parents focusing in part on interaction with kids, coaches and other parents. And while it went a long way towards ‘educating’ parents on how to play nice in the stands, incidents were still occurring with regularity. So this year Hockey Calgary has made the online course mandatory for at least one parent in every hockey family. So far about 10,000 of the hockey families in the city have completed the course. This leaves about 2500 players off the ice until their parents complete the course! … Read entire article »

One Cup To Rule All – NHL 2010-11

    Sep

    2010

With training camps under way and less than a month until puck drop on NHL 2010 – 2011 it's almost time to dust off the popcorn machine and your favorite team jersey (mine is the 'old' Orca third jersey)! This summer there has been plenty of player movement in the league, but one trend is becoming obvious – teams are going younger and less expensive thanks to the sluggish economy and salary cap. Even at this late date there are plenty of premium players waiting for contracts, like Brendan Morrison (excellent playmaking centre but getting on in years), Ryan Johnson (is there a better shot blocker in the league?) and Bill Guerin (who would make even ME look good on his line!). Some of the 'fading stars' like Pavel Demitra, Evgeni Nabokov … Read entire article »
