Supporting Youth Curling

On November 18th at the Teeswater Curling Club’s Open House, Richard Elliot presented Paul Ruetz a cheque on behalf of the former Teeswater Archery Club to put towards the club. The money will go towards the youth program which will be free, running Friday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 starting January 13th and run until the end of March. Curling is a great alternative winter sport that a lot of youth don’t get to experience. It is … Read entire article »
Gold Medal Performance by Cargill Blue

I’ve been a soccer coach/co-coach a few years now. As I’d written earlier, Sunday, August 17th was the big year-end U10 tournament in Hanover for the Saugeen Mixed Youth League. My team, the South Bruce Red “Fireballs” won two of their three games. Essentially coming 2nd on the ‘B’ side, and therefore going home with a bronze metal, (just like the 2nd place ‘A’ side winners). We were beaten by Cargill Blue. … Read entire article »

The Bigger Picture

Judy said it well this morning – “Each choice we make causes a ripple effect in our lives, when things happen to us, it is the reaction you choose that makes the difference between the sorrows of our past, and the joy in our future…” This morning the hockey world is reeling once again at the sudden and untimely death of a young NHL player. Like the recent death of Derek Boogarde, yesterday’s passing of Rick … Read entire article »
Going Out Like Fireballs!

The SouthBruce Red U10 soccer team, the “Fireballs” played their last regular game Tuesday August 9 at home. A loss set them into 10th place out of 16 teams in the league. Not a true reflection of how consistently they played however, as this team ‘floated’ around 8th place most of the season! Sunday in the year-end tournament of the Saugeen Mixed League at Hanover, SBR Fireballs played like champions! Their first match, against the mighty … Read entire article »

The Loud Man Learns to Talk

I don’t cross-post from Digital Twilight often, thankfully perhaps, but with Father’s Day coming up I thought you might appreciate this article. On Sunday, if you can, talk to your Dad, even if it is like pulling teeth or you are far, far away. Thanks! – ml * * * * * Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again - Simon & Garfunkel 'Sounds of Silence' (1970) My Dad and I were excited when the NHL granted Vancouver a franchise. I was 12. Toronto and Montreal were light years away from our house on the beach. It was time for us to have a ‘hometown’ team we could call our own. And from the first time ‘Kurt’ pulled the C over his head and skated out onto the ice we were Canuckleheads. Those … Read entire article »
The Conspiracy Theories Go Wild.

Gary Bettman hates Canada, right? The NHL has already decided that Boston is going to win the Cup rather than those dope-smoking Vancouver people, right? After all it has been 18 years since the Cup came north of the border and heaven knows we don’t want LotusLand on The Pacific to take possession of Lord Stanley’s Mug before Burke’s Army in the Big Smoke! The recent injury to Horton and subsequent suspension of Aaron Rome has given plenty of fuel to the conspiracy theorists as to the ‘real’ motives of the NHL. But first the facts… a. The hit was late – almost a full second late after Horton had passed the puck. b. Horton was in a vulnerable position. c. The hit was NOT a headshot. d. The hit was NOT a blindside. c. The injury to … Read entire article »

Welcome Home!

And then there were seven… Earlier today the National Hockey League announced the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers to True North Sports and Entertainment, with the team to play in Winnipeg beginning in the 2011 – 2012 season (subject to approval by the leagues Board of Governors)! Well, it's about time! For those born after 1996, The Winnipeg Jets were a professional hockey team based in Winnipeg, that played in both the World Hockey Association (WHA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1972 to 1996. Due to mounting financial troubles, in 1996 the franchise moved to Phoenix, Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes. During their playing history the Jets were three-time winners of the WHA Championship (The AVCO Cup) and had a number of record holders, including: Most goals in a season: Teemu Selanne, … Read entire article »

Canada’s Team?
27
Round 4 of the NHL playoffs start next week. This is it, the final two teams left standing after the conference quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals, East vs. West for all the marbles. Or in the case of the NHL, Lord Stanley's Cup. Since 1993 the Cup has headed south of the border. But this year Canada has a chance to reclaim THE Cup, with the Vancouver Canucks having already secured their place in the finals. Now I am a Canucks fan, have been since Orland Kurtenbach first pulled the Rink and Stick with the white 'C' over his head and skated out onto the ice at the Coliseum. I am an unabashed Canucklehead, a fanatic who has lived through the dark days when the team was made up of cast-offs from the other … Read entire article »
