Teeswater Library Official Grand Opening
26
With one snip of the oversized 'scissors' Carol Mitchell, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, officially opened the newly renovated Teeswater Library! As Marzio Appoloni, Bruce County Library Director (and today's Master of Ceremonies) aptly put, visioning and completing the renovations reminded him of the speech by Winston Churchill that was only 9 words long – "Never Give Up!" repeated three times over. From the leadership of Les Nichols through the corporate sponsors, local volunteers to Darrel Weishar's drawings to the actual hammering and sawing by Domm Construction, renovating the last Carnegie Library in Bruce County has been an exercise in determination, a determination to provide a critical facility for Teeswater now and in the future without destroying the Carnegie legacy. And each and every Teeswater person should feel proud every time they walk … Read entire article »

LocalMotive Project Launches Regional Ride-Share
16
There’s a new way to get around if you’re a resident of Bruce/Grey, and a new way to reduce your driving costs if you own a vehicle. The LocalMotive Project has launched a regional ride-share group to address some of the rural transportation challenges that local residents face. According to Shane Jolley, coordinator of the LocalMotive Project, the ride-share is an initial step in a broader transportation strategy for the region. “We have an increasing number of seniors who no longer drive, as well as students needing rides to and from college or university”, stated Jolley. “We live in a region where the goods and services we rely on are not always nearby – from doctors to groceries – and if you don’t own a vehicle and drive, it can present a … Read entire article »

Now that the leaves are falling Old Man Winter is surely around the corner. Becky Striepe, sustainable living expert at Care2.Com has some great ideas on how to save energy this winter. Get a Draft Dodger: Nope, I’m not talking about avoiding military service. Draft dodgers are filled fabric tubes that you wedge under the door to keep out cold air. Normally filled with sand or small beans, they do a great job of adding a little extra insulation around doors or windows. Make the Most of the Sunlight: If possible, keep your blinds open during the day and close them at night. This does double duty. In the daytime, sunlight will warm your home naturally, and at night your blinds will help keep heat from escaping through your windows. Trim the Tree: … Read entire article »
Day of Purple

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” - Dalai Lama It’s been decided that on October 20th we will wear purple in honour of the 6 gay boys who have committed suicide recently due to homophobic abuse in their homes and schools. Purple represents spirit on the LBGTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you : Spirit. Please wear purple on october 20th. RIP Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase, Asher Brown, Billy Lucas, to all the other unknown lives lost to intolerance and ignorance, and to all of the other boys and girls who are silently suffering because of such cruel acts. High Tech Spin On An Ancient Art
15
Ok, so I have to admit being just a little biased, but as a non-knitter I can only sit and marvel at what two flying needles can create! Who would think that what just a few weeks before was keeping a wee lamb warm in the field is now a rainbow coloured lace shawl! One of the earliest known examples of knitting was finely decorated cotton socks found in Egypt in the end of the first millennium AD! And even now in the Internet Age, knitting remains one of the fastest growing hobbies in the world! ESPECIALLY AMONGST MEN! But what happens when you are 5000 miles from your knitting guru and in need of some 'hands-on' instruction in spinning, knitting or weaving? This was the conundrum faced by a pair of well-known … Read entire article »
