Last night the ‘Reach Out and Learn’ continuing education program kicked off at Teeswater United Church!
A co-project between Teeswater United Church and indigoblues.ca, Reach Out and Learn aims to fill the adult education / continuing education gap in Teeswater and area.
The first evening seminar, titled ‘The Technology Survival Guide’ was three hours of information on how to pick the best computer for your needs and take care of it so that it works for YOU for years to come. The evening was filled with information, sometimes simple ideas we never think of, that will keep you out of technology traps that end up costing you an arm and a leg. And from the nods and smiles at the seminar we all have ‘been there – done that’ before!
The next seminar in the series, ‘All The Software Your Computer will EVER Need – For LESS Than $5′ will take place at ...

Hello To All,
Today is the first time in over two months that I have been able to sit down at the computer and actually read and write something that I can actually see.
I am able to do so due to the generosity and foresight of an individual who signed his/her organ donation card and carried it with them. Thanks to that person I received a new cornea two weeks ago. Things are healing up nicely.

Hi Mark:
Thanks for posting www.gutenberg.org site. This site was mentioned to me when I was in college because of my learning disability. I somehow feel like technology is finally get to the rural areas. When I first moved back to Bruce County I couldn’t even get internet.
I said to one of my teachers that I was going to scan and save it in a mp3 format the book of Anne of Green Gables, so that I can read it. With Assistive Devices, I have read more than I have for years. There are different ones that I use from NaturalReader (naturalreaders.com), Readplease, using the iPod to Langage Master. I started to use these tools back in 2003 when I started in college.
Now with the eBook, people can read where ever ...

Pain is our body’s way of telling us something is wrong.
But what happens when our body’s sense widespread pain when there are no other obvious symptoms?
Fibromyalgia is a little understood disease, affecting about 2% of the population, usually women (about 9:1). It can strike in childhood though most often detected from age 25 to 50. And because there are often no other physical symptoms can be misdiagnosed as anything from acid reflux to chronic depression.
And widespread pain may not be the only facet of Fibromyalgia. Other issues include debilitating fatigue, sleep disturbance, joint stiffness and sensitivity to touch.
Key to managing Fibromyalgia is a support network of family, friends and professionals. To this end Anita Hofmann, herself a fibromyalgia sufferer, has started a support group in our area. The ‘Fibromyalgia Peer Group in Huron County’ meets at the Wingham Library the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 4pm to 5:30pm. Soon ...

We live in an 'Out of Sight – Out of Mind' society. So much so that there is even a recognized acronym – NIMBY – to explain who we are as people.
NIMBY – Not In My BackYard – is that blissful 'state of grace' that allows us to let the world go to hell in a hand-basket, just as long as it doesn't block our view.
I suppose in some ways it is understandable. We all work hard to make a good life for our family, buy a decent home, fix up our lawns and gardens and generally make ourselves presentable. So why not be able to enjoy our little slice of Canadian heaven without having to look at the eyesore of a wind turbine or landfill?
But there is also the game of survival happening, quietly, insidiously, far beyond what we see on the 6 O'clock news.
This past weekend I took ...

Guest editorial by Shane Jolley, coordinator of The LocalMotive Project in Grey & Bruce Counties.

Only a government could take something as pure and simple as wind and make it more despised than a snowstorm in July.
I follow the continued debate about wind power in Ontario with dismay, as both proponents and opponents distort the facts to fortify their positions. To some, the image of a wind turbine is the very symbol of a clean energy future. To others it is the symbol of corporate imperialism; the extraction of resources and profit without compensation.
The issue has pitted neighbour against neighbour in communities across Grey and Bruce Counties. At the core of it is the McGuinty government’s disrespect for the decision making authority of rural municipalities, informed by local citizens.
In an attempt to push back against the heavy hand of provincial government policy, many faulty claims are trotted out as ...
