What is Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding without Gravy?
Boring, for starters…
The Chinese knew this 2000 years ago when the first chef squeezed a mass of fermented soya paste and discovered the liquid added zing to the chicken he was stir-frying. Today Soya Sauce is a staple in Chinese cooking and a condiment that should be in every fridge.
Recent studies have shown that soya products may not be good for your health after all – increasing allergic reactions and causing a slew of issues from hoof to hypothalamus! But surprisingly, that salty, fermented soya sauce you like to dash on the Ramen might be the best form of soy after all. It seems that fermenting the wee bean actually destroys the chemicals known to cause the problems noted above. Now if only they could figure how to ferment soy beans without using salt brine.
This is good news if you, ...

The bread machine has been working overtime this holiday season. There is just something about adding ‘fresh from the oven’ bread to any family meal, not to mention the wonderful smell it gives the kitchen!
Oatmeal-Bran Minnie Bread is a hearty, dense bread well suited for toast, sandwiches (turkey of course!) and quite likely toasts up to make wonderful croutons! But the loaves are smallish (hence Minnie, who also asked for the recipe…) compared to regular bread machine white.
Also slightly different in this recipe is the addition of Bran Buds right from the box, which melt during the dough cycle to add a nutty flavour to the bread.

Around our house eating can sometimes be an adventure, with The Boss rolling her eyes and only jumping in where there is risk to life and limb. Let’s just say I get bored easily, and that applies to food as well.
Here are some of the somewhat off-beat ‘concoctions’ that have appeared in our kitchen lately:

Want to jazz up your Egg Salad Sandwiches? Instead of the boring smunched hardboiled eggs, mayo and salt and pepper, try substituting half of your mayo with Ranch or Caesar Dressing. The result is a lighter, zippier sangy that the kids will love. For an even kickier sandwich simply replace the mayo with your favourite white cream dressing (even I draw the line at Thousand Island – ick!).
And while you are at it how about tossing a dollop of prepared mustard into the mix? The result is almost like having a potato salad sandwich (one of ...

With the colder weather I have been hauling out the bread machine much more regularly.
But with at least two lactose intolerant and two sugar sensitive people in the house I have been much more conscious of making bread with less of the ‘white bread syndrome’ and little or no milk.
My latest attempt seems to have finally hit the mark – a fortified white bread with NO milk or white sugar in the recipe. And NOT lead-bread, that nasty two inch high, heavy as a brick stuff that has ‘on occasion’ appeared in my machine.
This recipe, a heavily modified one I found on the web substitutes brown sugar and molasses for the white sugar and uses no milk. Oatmeal has been added to the recipe to give it better ‘sticking power’ on colder winter days.

The countdown to Advent always means a work party at Teeswater United, hard work perhaps but lots of fun (especially if you get to see Sir Laurence trying to hang a wreath while perched on the back of the choir loft!) and just a plain good chance to get into the holiday spirit!
Of course before all that ‘hard work’ the troops need sustenance, this year in the form of Jane McQuarrie’s hearty Turkey Soup (hopefully we will get the recipe for that…), cheese and crackers, and especially a ‘sinful’ power bar / dessert treat from Mary Nichols.
Mary’s ‘Sin Bars’ are just that, melt in your mouth yumminess of almonds, graham crackers and buttery brown sugar. My condolences to all with a nut allergy as they are definitely worth trying! Mary also says they are quite easy to make, perhaps a fun activity for snowbound kids?
Here then are the treats that ...

Cousin Tracy is on a roll… this is her second recipe sent today! Maybe I can talk her into a Recipe column? What do you think??
She and I share more than just a common relative (my wife). We both love diablo-hot food, whether it is curries, spicy Thai, Szechuan hot or Mexican. This hot dip recipe calls for Jalapenos but if you asked her really nice I bet she has a couple of Habaneros hiding in the pantry.
Chile con queso (Spanish for “chile with cheese”), usually known simply as queso, is an appetizer or side dish of melted cheese and chile pepper typically served in Tex-Mex restaurants.

These are perhaps the BEST banana muffins I have ever eaten – and I KNOW banana muffins.
As the story goes, we were giving away our stroller and car seat to a newly delivered 2nd cousin of Lori’s. When she picked them up Aunt Eileen offered to pay but no way – this is family. As a compromise Aunt Eileen brought us a dozen of her banana muffins, which promptly disappeared, mostly down the gullet of the Junior General. Needless to say everytime Aunt Eileen comes to visit the first thing the J.G. looks for are her banana muffins. Got Muffins?, get Hugs… No Muffins?, Seee Yaaa!.
So beware if you make this recipe when I am around! I might just lean over and snitch yours!

Definitely my kind of recipe, you can follow the instructions word for word or read the Notes first and go crazy with your imagination. After all they are Anything Cookies!
So here is the recipe from Tracy (with lots of notes – my kind of cookie recipe!)

Necessity is the Mother of invention…
Somehow we ended up being gifted a dozen packages of hot dog and hamburger buns and a half dozen loaves of bread! The timing was perfect actually as Mrs. Teeswater.ca was just heading out the door for a week in the sunny south, leaving us ‘menfolk’ to bach it for a week.
As conversations amongst males tend, the first thing that came to mind for the bread (after LOTS of toast) was dessert, more particularly Bread Pudding.
Now I am a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to Bread and Rice Pudding, and that means RAISINS – those lovely little brown lumps of sweet goodness. Sadly the management has a distinctly opposite opinion of raisins so it is rare indeed that you will find them lurking in the cupboard here.
What to do, what to do? All this luscious bread and not a raisin to go with ...

It must be that time of year when the cooler, damper weather brings the flu bugs out to play. What better way to beat the autumn flu than a spicy hot soup full of pasta, veggies and all sorts of goodness!
This is sort of a variation on a variation on a variation of a simple Beef and Pasta soup, but with a couple of wrinkles tossed in to kick it up a notch or two.
