Simply Different

Around our house eating can sometimes be an adventure, with The Boss rolling her eyes and only jumping in where there is risk to life and limb. Let’s just say I get bored easily, and that applies to food as well. Here are some of the somewhat off-beat ‘concoctions’ that have appeared in our kitchen lately: Want to jazz up your Egg Salad Sandwiches? Instead of the boring smunched hardboiled eggs, mayo and salt and pepper, try … Read entire article »

Oatmeal Bread With Oomph

With the colder weather I have been hauling out the bread machine much more regularly. But with at least two lactose intolerant and two sugar sensitive people in the house I have been much more conscious of making bread with less of the ‘white bread syndrome’ and little or no milk. My latest attempt seems to have finally hit the mark – a fortified white bread with NO milk or white sugar in the recipe. And NOT … Read entire article »

Supporting Youth Curling

On November 18th at the Teeswater Curling Club’s Open House, Richard Elliot presented Paul Ruetz a cheque on behalf of the former Teeswater Archery Club to put towards the club. The money will go towards the youth program which will be free, running Friday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 starting January 13th and run until the end of March. Curling is a great alternative winter sport that a lot of youth don’t get to experience. It is … Read entire article »

December 2011 Almanac

December is the twelfth and last month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days. December’s flower is the narcissus or holly. December’s birthstones are turquoise, lapis lazuli, zircon, topaz (blue), or tanzanite. In Latin, decem means “ten”. December was also the tenth month in the Roman calendar until a monthless winter period was divided between January and February. December is the month with the shortest daylight … Read entire article »

Sinful Sunday Snacks

The countdown to Advent always means a work party at Teeswater United, hard work perhaps but lots of fun (especially if you get to see Sir Laurence trying to hang a wreath while perched on the back of the choir loft!) and just a plain good chance to get into the holiday spirit! Of course before all that ‘hard work’ the troops need sustenance, this year in the form of Jane McQuarrie’s hearty Turkey Soup (hopefully … Read entire article »

A Change in The Weather?

Well, that was a bit of a rude awakening! Anyone trying drive on the highways last night and early this morning might have wondered if skates would have worked better than snow tires! But it is that time of year and the old-timers tell me we have had snow a lot earlier than this year. But what has changed is predicting when and where we will get our winter weather this year. “It’s almost as if you … Read entire article »

Close Encounter – No Deep Impact

You see it in the movies – a massive planet killing asteroid hurtling towards earth while Bruce Willis and his intrepid team drill madly to place the nuclear charges that will blow the beasty out of the sky.  For good measure we have Tea Leoni standing on the beach pensively watching as the tsunami from ‘Deep Impact‘  prepares to wash her away into the closing credits. Tonight if you look up you might just catch a … Read entire article »

Chili Con Queso (Cream Cheese with Jalapenos)

Cousin Tracy is on a roll… this is her second recipe sent today! Maybe I can talk her into a Recipe column? What do you think?? She and I share more than just a common relative (my wife). We both love diablo-hot food, whether it is curries, spicy Thai, Szechuan hot or Mexican.  This hot dip recipe calls for Jalapenos but if you asked her really nice I bet she has a couple of Habaneros hiding … Read entire article »
