Leap Year is the legendary time when women can feel free to pop the question to their men.
It is an Irish legend that tells us St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women were having to wait far too long for a marriage proposal.
So he proclaimed February 29 as the day women could get down on one knee and ask a man to pledge his love eternal.
Since the opportunity only comes around every four years, the Saint built in a strategy for the possibility a guy may say no.
Rather than be rejected and dejected, reports The Telegraph.co.uk, “He also decreed … that if turned down, the woman should extract a fine from the man or be given a beautiful garment of some kind.”
So there you have it ladies. Ask … and ye shall receive. If not an engagement ring, the guy will have to get you something for your efforts.

Last night the ‘Reach Out and Learn’ continuing education program kicked off at Teeswater United Church!
A co-project between Teeswater United Church and indigoblues.ca, Reach Out and Learn aims to fill the adult education / continuing education gap in Teeswater and area.
The first evening seminar, titled ‘The Technology Survival Guide’ was three hours of information on how to pick the best computer for your needs and take care of it so that it works for YOU for years to come. The evening was filled with information, sometimes simple ideas we never think of, that will keep you out of technology traps that end up costing you an arm and a leg. And from the nods and smiles at the seminar we all have ‘been there – done that’ before!
The next seminar in the series, ‘All The Software Your Computer will EVER Need – For LESS Than $5′ will take place at ...

What is Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding without Gravy?
Boring, for starters…
The Chinese knew this 2000 years ago when the first chef squeezed a mass of fermented soya paste and discovered the liquid added zing to the chicken he was stir-frying. Today Soya Sauce is a staple in Chinese cooking and a condiment that should be in every fridge.
Recent studies have shown that soya products may not be good for your health after all – increasing allergic reactions and causing a slew of issues from hoof to hypothalamus! But surprisingly, that salty, fermented soya sauce you like to dash on the Ramen might be the best form of soy after all. It seems that fermenting the wee bean actually destroys the chemicals known to cause the problems noted above. Now if only they could figure how to ferment soy beans without using salt brine.
This is good news if you, ...

The bread machine has been working overtime this holiday season. There is just something about adding ‘fresh from the oven’ bread to any family meal, not to mention the wonderful smell it gives the kitchen!
Oatmeal-Bran Minnie Bread is a hearty, dense bread well suited for toast, sandwiches (turkey of course!) and quite likely toasts up to make wonderful croutons! But the loaves are smallish (hence Minnie, who also asked for the recipe…) compared to regular bread machine white.
Also slightly different in this recipe is the addition of Bran Buds right from the box, which melt during the dough cycle to add a nutty flavour to the bread.

January is the first month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of seven months with the length of 31 days. The first day of the month is known as New Year’s Day. It is, on average, the coldest month of the year within most of the Northern Hemisphere (where it is the second month of winter) and the warmest month of the year within most of the Southern Hemisphere (where it is the second month of summer). In the Southern hemisphere, January is the seasonal equivalent of July in the Northern hemisphere.
January starts on the same day of the week as October in common years, and starts on the same day of the week as April and July in leap years. In a common year, January ends on the same day of the week as February and October, and ends on the same day of ...

By: Erika Inglis
The world of food is a huge market that is rapidly growing and changing. What it means to eat today is very different from what it meant to eat 50 years ago. Our food is no longer solely developed in the fields, but also in laboratories. Genetically engineered foods have become as integrated into society as eating. While there are some benefits with production at the field level, the direct and indirect ingestion of these genetically engineered crops have been proven to be harmful to both the health of humans and animals.
Genetically engineered foods are created for human and livestock consumption and are modified in a laboratory to generate desired traits. Genetic enhancements previously were achieved exclusively through traditional breeding. However, genetic engineering can create plants with the exact desired trait relatively quickly and accurately. Genes can be transferred from one plant to another plant of a different ...

Around our house eating can sometimes be an adventure, with The Boss rolling her eyes and only jumping in where there is risk to life and limb. Let’s just say I get bored easily, and that applies to food as well.
Here are some of the somewhat off-beat ‘concoctions’ that have appeared in our kitchen lately:

Want to jazz up your Egg Salad Sandwiches? Instead of the boring smunched hardboiled eggs, mayo and salt and pepper, try substituting half of your mayo with Ranch or Caesar Dressing. The result is a lighter, zippier sangy that the kids will love. For an even kickier sandwich simply replace the mayo with your favourite white cream dressing (even I draw the line at Thousand Island – ick!).
And while you are at it how about tossing a dollop of prepared mustard into the mix? The result is almost like having a potato salad sandwich (one of ...

With the colder weather I have been hauling out the bread machine much more regularly.
But with at least two lactose intolerant and two sugar sensitive people in the house I have been much more conscious of making bread with less of the ‘white bread syndrome’ and little or no milk.
My latest attempt seems to have finally hit the mark – a fortified white bread with NO milk or white sugar in the recipe. And NOT lead-bread, that nasty two inch high, heavy as a brick stuff that has ‘on occasion’ appeared in my machine.
This recipe, a heavily modified one I found on the web substitutes brown sugar and molasses for the white sugar and uses no milk. Oatmeal has been added to the recipe to give it better ‘sticking power’ on colder winter days.
