Funny How It Goes

Dec

Christmas is about family and memories. It can be a blissful or bittersweet trip down memory lane. And it can be chance to reflect on the tall tales and larger than life people from your past. This past month a larger than life character left my Army ‘family’, bringing us all closer in shock, sadness and grief to share memories, pictures and more than one tall tale. For me it has tempered the frenetic pace of finishing websites, practicing for choir and the rest of the crazy stuff that usually precedes Christmas. And without dwelling too much on it does make me sit back a bit and think about how funny it goes sometimes. 30 years ago I was spending a first Christmas with my then fiancee, 20 years ago a first … Read entire article »

Minnie Thoughts In Christmas Week

My friend Minnie is a smart cookie. Like most of us she zooms along in life, putting out fires, trying to fit 27 hours of ‘stuff’ into a 24 hour day and generally trying to keep track of where she is at any given time and where she is headed. But every once in awhile she will pop me a note or post something on FB that makes me stop for a second and go “Wow! that … Read entire article »

On Cycles and Velocipedes

They say when one door closes another opens – nine years ago I had just lost a very important person in my life, followed shortly by a relationship that is HUGELY important to me today. If you  follow numerology the world is supposed to work on a nine year cycle, the first three preparing, the second three executing and the final three attaining. And today I am entering my ninth year of this current cycle. Wow! Total … Read entire article »

South Bruce PERFORMS!

Once again South Bruce showed that there are VERY talented people on every street and sideroad in our municipality as the 4th Annual South Bruce Old-Fashioned Christmas Concert took to the Teeswater Town Hall stage on Friday night! 18 performances by local musicians, singers, dancers and readers filled the hall with energy and spirit as we head into the holiday season. And not all were ‘seasoned professionals’, with the acts spanning ages from six to seniors! … Read entire article »

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas?

We’ve been getting a bit of snow over the last few weeks, enough to remind us winter is on it’s way. There are many signs of the approaching Christmas season too. Some, a bit more unusual than others…. Last weekend a 32 year old woman in Kelowna, BC had some help with a 7kg fir tree she’d just purchased from her local Real Canadian Super Store. She was setting the tree up to be an ‘unusual … Read entire article »

Virtually Useful

My nephew said it best a week or so ago on Facebook… “Tumblr/Facebook is starting to annoy slightly. People making posts about cancer saying “If you don’t reblog this you don’t have a heart’ or ‘Reblog this to help cancer.’ It’s a post on the internet, it won’t stop cancer. Cancer is an awful thing, yeah, but just because 1251 people reblogged a post won’t make it any better. If you want to help, do something … Read entire article »

We DO Remember

We DO Remember

You wonder sometimes, with the last of the WW2 vets aging and all of our WW1 vets passed on, whether this might be the last year for Remembrance Day. Or if not the last year perhaps just another holiday observed without meaning. It was with that thought in mind that I trudged through the sleet, my C&E branch cravat tucked under my scarf, to take part in the service at the Town Hall. And at first … Read entire article »

I Remember…

I Remember…

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since I last stood on a parade square. For most of the years since my ‘Army days’ I have quietly observed Remembrance Day, stopping my day in time to catch the service on Parlaiment Hill. I buy a poppy, which I usually lose immediately after and I like to take a bit of time to think about Bob, Willy and the other old ‘wingers’ that have gone … Read entire article »
