What’s a guy gotta do go get some respect around here?! Recently retired Frankly should be wondering just that, but,… he’s probably asleep on the couch right now, hoping for a tummy rub.
Frankly is my new-found hero, as are all others in his former line of work! Frankly spent 7 years as a police dog in Florida, (Miami-Dade County). He’s a chocolate lab living comfortably with his former handler, Detective Douglas Bartelt.
During his career Frankly is credited with the seizure of over 2.5 TONS of marijuana and nearly
$5 MILLION in “drug-contaminated money.” Being a lab, (synonymous with “happy” and “friendly”), Frankly was paraded around airports, sports arenas and other public places- his nose on high alert for illegal drugs. Unless they don’t like being licked, most people just don’t fear this breed! Dogs can be trained to sniff out meth labs and explosives too. They are a policeman’s trusted partner ...

Tired of the same old 9 to 5? Hoping for a new career in the New Year? Need action and adventure? MI5 may be calling very soon! …That is, if you’re a British citizen and caught their GCHQ website on time.
The famous British spy agency has been openly advertising for spies since the 1990′s, (and also gleaning candidates from Cambridge and Oxford Universities). This year they went viral! In early November, for about a month, MI5 posted a special cryptographic puzzle. I had a look. They describe it as a chart of 160 pairs of numbers & letters. It looked like BINGO gone cyber-loco to me!
MI5 is specifically looking for hackers. They want experts in ‘shell code obfuscation mechanisms’ who can hack and (therefore) defend Britain’s internet security. Puzzle solvers will be contacted in the spring. If they also happen to have a gift for foreign and rare languages then ...

We’ve been getting a bit of snow over the last few weeks, enough to remind us winter is on it’s way. There are many signs of the approaching Christmas season too. Some, a bit more unusual than others….
Last weekend a 32 year old woman in Kelowna, BC had some help with a 7kg fir tree she’d just purchased from her local Real Canadian Super Store. She was setting the tree up to be an ‘unusual object’ in a ‘digital scavenger hunt’. Along with some ornaments, the woman had helium-filled balloons attached to this special tree. She’d meant for it to hover off the ground. Many non-participants reported the unusual object, however, when the 5 foot tether didn’t hold and the ‘balloon tree’ floated away. This sounds very much like a geocaching event gone wrong to me!
One witness, C.J. Wilkins, spotted the thing while driving late Sunday afternoon and said it ...

You may have read that the 7-Billionth person in the world was born on October 31, 2011, (a Scorpio, for what it’s worth). You may be wondering “So, what does that have to do with ME?” Well, here’s something just as interesting as talking about you! From the BBC comes a new website. It’s based on facts, figures and statistics gathered by the United Nations Population Division. It’s called “7 Billion People and You; What’s Your Number?” If you were born any year after 1910 this works.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15391515
Peck in your birth date and and the site will tell you, approximately, what number you were born as on this planet. The site then gives some very interesting world population stats, asks for your country of birth, and eventually your gender. With each answer, some new data.
An example. My father was born in Denmark in 1927. He was the 2,000,065,625th person born on ...

About 5 or 6 years ago the Wingham Public Library hosted an afternoon with writer/illustrator Andrea Beck. Andrea has put out numerous kids’ books featuring her character ‘Elliot Moose’. There’s a cartoon show “Elliot Moose,” that runs sporadically on TVO I think, (we’re passed that age, so I really don’t know tv scheduling). It does have a very catchy theme however. It puts me in mind of a little guy stomping down a trail with big intentions!
Elliot Moose (Stomp) Is on the Loose. (Stomp stomp) Elliot Moose (Stomp) Is on the Loose, (Stomp stomp) Elliot Moose (Stomp) Is on the Loose,(da da taa) ELL-i-ot MOOSE! Is – on – the – Loose!. Or something like that!… YOU DON’T WANT ME TO SING! EVER.
My gal was just the right age to enjoy that special visit by Ms. Beck. Watching and interacting with a really nice Canadian lady who happened to ...

Ha! I can see how your mind works already! You’re thinking about NASTY 4-letter words. Well,… In reference to preparing for the FALL FAIR I’m here to say there are a mix of good 4-letter and bad 4-letter words at my house!
Let’s start with BAKE. That’s a nice word! This was the verb used around the house on Thursday, the day before the dead-line for entering the baking and other various contests into our local FALL FAIR. My GIRL decided to BAKE. This meant GOOD EATS for Dad and I as she tried out a recipe for Grandma’s bread machine!
Then it was; “Mom, I’m going to BUSY all day. I’ll need your HELP. Could you please WASH the dishes for me?” She explained that I was not allowed to help her with the baking after-all. WASH isn’t such a nice 4-letter word really, not by the end of the day ...

I’ve been a soccer coach/co-coach a few years now.
As I’d written earlier, Sunday, August 17th was the big year-end U10 tournament in Hanover for the Saugeen Mixed Youth League. My team, the South Bruce Red “Fireballs” won two of their three games. Essentially coming 2nd on the ‘B’ side, and therefore going home with a bronze metal, (just like the 2nd place ‘A’ side winners).
We were beaten by Cargill Blue. Both teams played well. Played hard. My kids just couldn’t get anything passed their goalie! Laurie added that the goalie had never played, (organized), soccer until this season. Wow! Stellar performance kiddo!!
So far, curiosity hadn’t got the best of me the other 3 years of tournaments. I’m usually ready to head home no matter how we placed. I’ve been happy my kids did their best. One year ...

The SouthBruce Red U10 soccer team, the “Fireballs” played their last regular game Tuesday August 9 at home. A loss set them into 10th place out of 16 teams in the league. Not a true reflection of how consistently they played however, as this team ‘floated’ around 8th place most of the season!
Sunday in the year-end tournament of the Saugeen Mixed League at Hanover, SBR Fireballs played like champions! Their first match, against the mighty Mildmay Green was won handily at 4 – 0. Goals scored by Natalie Fischer, Erica Ruetz and a pair by Garrett Curran! With their confidence stoked and an hours’ break to refresh themselves, SBR went on to beat a very tough Walkerton White 3 – 0. Goals this game were scored by Natalie, Erica, and McKinley “Queeny” Turnbull.
With storm clouds and thoughts of gold metals on the horizon, the Fireballs charged into their third game ...

So said Jimmy Soul in his same-titled 60's hit. I guess the blush was slightly worn off THIS rose when we got married. I was 33! Marriage is a thorny issue for many people. I really think that if you want roses, grow them yourself! Your partnership will be better if you're personally happy in the first place, well for the most part anyhow. And, like growing roses, don't muck with it too much! Don't continue with a relationship, at least not too deeply, if you think for a minute you're going to change someone. If YOU'RE the right person for THEM, they'll change in wonderful ways- mainly, improving on what you already found attractive! And, geeze, don't crowd the bed! I sure don't understand people who fool around on their ...

About 60 kids brought their parents and grandparents out to the Kinette's annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Teeswater Fair Grounds.
Though it was fairly breezy today, the rain held off, the grass was green and the sun was out! I say that because in previous years we've hosted the Egg Hunt in snow and in rain. The kids love it no matter!
Everybody got a treat bag and a little stuffed bunny this year. Many Thanks to Ken & Ruth Ann Scott at Yokassippi Auctions for the donated bunnies! They were a hit!
Some children found a special 'silver' egg and won an even larger stuffy! The Teeswater Kinettes would also like to thank all the kids who entered the colouring contest. You can see the entries at the River Village Co-Op Market. It's always so hard to pick just one winner from the age categories!!
