The Halfway Pole of Summer 2012
By Mark W. Law (Aug 3rd, 2012)
I like to think of the August long weekend as the mid-point of Summer – the kids have had a bit of a holiday and now starts the secret yearnings for Labour Day and the first day of school.
Well, at least around our house…
Lots of changes this Summer at Casa Marcy Street. A slightly used Jeep Cherokee arrived in the driveway in early July signalling the last of a bleary-eyed Bear crawling out of bed to haul Benner to work at 4:30 a.m. So far so good, though his Mom says he follows too closely and the Junior General is thinking that the back seat is too big!
It seems that Doug The Grocery Guy has settled in at River Village Market. Produce is looking pretty spiffy and I understand last night’s open house at the store was a standing room only crowd! Good on ya Teeswater! In my usual fashion I looked up from relative templating in Android to realize that what was 4 pm. had become 9:30! Such is the life of a geek…
One of the little gems Doug pointed out at the store today was PURPLE peppers. Even though they look a bit odd, he assured me they are halfway between a green and a red pepper with just a bit of a kick. Tonight they nestled beside some grilled yellow zucchini on the barbecue and I can tell you they will be finding their way into my shopping cart again! Easy-peasy to fix – just slice into spears (remove the seeds of course), drizzle with oil and let them roast slowly on the back of the barbie. Awesome alone but also wicked good as a garnish over baked potatoes and sour cream.
And if you are a fan of grilled zucchini on the barbecue try the yellow ones at the market! Cooking time is slightly less than green zucchini with a slightly sweeter and nutty taste. Great with grated parmesan or havarti melted and crisped over top.
Nice to see the first coat of asphalt on Elizabeth Street! It will be great for seniors to be able to park in front of Teeswater United when services resume in September. Not to mention all the folks on the street who have been parking wherever they could find for the past few weeks. My only wonder is how long it will take the yahoos to start laying rubber on the street. And while I am at it what sport is it to spin your tires so you can throw gravel on the front porch of a senior just out of hospital? Yeah, YOU – get REAL! Next time you might just park and offer to mow her lawn or something instead of showing your IQ is the same size as your shoes.
Another month and the kids will be heading back to school, Clinton Street will begin to resemble its next evolution and autumn veggies will start appearing in River Village Co-op. In the meantime enjoy the long weekend and rest of August!
And hey! try the purple peppers – they Rock!
Mark
