Teeswater Otters Win OASA Elimination!By Kelly-Jane McKague-Rember (Jul 3rd, 2012)
It was a Canada Day worth celebrating for the Teeswater Otters Bantam Boys OASA team this past weekend. Fifteen teams from across Ontario battled at the All Ontario Elimination hosted by Napanee Minor Ball.
Teeswater faced teams from Tavistock (5-2), Fullerton (9-0) and Grand Valley (2-1) before meeting up with arch rivals Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumber Jacks. The Jacks had their way with Teeswater in their first meeting of the tournament 8-0. With their first loss in the double knock out tournament, the Otters were set to play the host team Napanee Express in the semi final game.
Mother Nature had cooked up a warm one on Canada’s birthday, but both teams dug in and Teeswater came up with a handy 9-1 win over Napanee.
Port Perry was a fresh and rested undefeated team heading into the final showdown. With the Otters previous loss to the Jacks, Teeswater would have to beat them twice to bring home the hardware.
Teeswater won the first game 5-4 over Port Perry which forced a second and deciding game. The Otters lead off the scoring with a run in the first inning and racked up another four runs in the forth. The Jacks rallied to score a run in the forth and two in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough. Final score 5-3. The Otters brought the banner home to Teeswater. Otter pitcher Matt Wardrop sealed the deal with pitching honors for the tournament.
Top eight teams from this Elimination Tournament will move on to the “A” Tournament final in Port Perry Aug 10-12. As top two teams, both Teeswater and Port Perry earned themselves invitations to the Eastern Canadian Championships to be held in St. Croix Nova Scotia Aug 23-26th.
Congratulations boys and good luck!
