Monsieur Hire

No-one does ‘dark in the middle of the day’ like the French.

Monsieur Hire is a maladjusted, balding, middle-aged man living in France. He doesn’t like to talk to people. A young woman is murdered and a police detective suspects M. Hire, just because his neighbors think he is strange. Thus begins Monsieur Hire, a 1989 film from Patrice Leconte starring Michel Blanc and Sandrine Bonnaire.

While this sort of somewhat depressing French style may not be the cup of tea for everyone, watching the interplay between Blanc and Bonnaire is a treat. Throughout the movie you keep on hoping that this will end well, while knowing in the back of your mind that ruin is only a few minutes away. The twist at the end is a great touch, if only to completely validate the idea that as strange and unlikeable as Hire is, he is really a ‘nice guy’ underneath it all.

Monsieur Hire is in French with subtitles and runs 81 minutes. Though it is not rated for content, there is ONE VERY BRIEF topless shot so I suspect it would be considered PG. IMDB rates this movie 7.6 out of 10
