Is The Glass Half Full?

By: (February 22, 2011)

If you read the news lately you might start to think that the end-times are upon us!

In Egypt the government has been overthrown, Yemen is in the middle of a civil war, ditto Libya. Even 'The Forbidden City' is under siege as 450 million Chinese go online to create a sort of 'virtual Tiananman Square'.

Here at home, a venerable and well-established charity KAIROS has their funding yanked with a single stroke of the 'NOT pen' – then accused of being almost a terrorist organization.

Makes a person want to start digging a 1960's Cold War bomb shelter in the basement (Mine is dirt and field stone).

But there are a few positive lights flickering in what appears to be approaching darkness. Reading in the Globe and Mail, terrorism experts are saying that the new found democracy movements in the Middle East are actually harming Al Qaida!  Seems that democracy is the last thing Al Qaida wants since democracy cuts back on available terrorism recruits.

And here in town smiles are starting to spring up over the snowbanks!  A couple of VIP's in my world were offered new jobs last week and for the VERY first time the Junior General READ US a bedtime story!!

It all makes me wonder if reacting radically to the events here in Canada is actually playing right into the hands of those political parties counting on our votes out of fear?

Perhaps its time for Canadians to start showing our true colours – thoughtfulness, consideration and a sense of fair play. Then maybe our political parties will stop acting like spoiled children and open their arms to what will be a flood of refugees from Libya, Yemen and now possibly even New Zealand with last night's earthquake.

That would do us all proud (and fill the glass to overflowing).

Originally from the wee hamlet of Oyster Bay, BC, Mark has worked in many parts of the world, including almost all of the Canadian provinces, the United States, Europe and even a sand-filled radio station in North Africa. During that time he has written for military and local newspapers, served as editor for a number of online magazines as well as publishing his own popular ezine for new writers and artists – The ThinWire Journal. Mark has also penned more than 100 poems and essays and is an internationally known digital artist. And for anyone who lived in Northern BC during the 1980’s and 1990’s, Mark was the ‘morning weatherman’ on CBC Radio.
