10 Tips for Successful Recycling

Dec

I just received the 2011 recycling schedule from Bruce Recycles and while posting the collection dates on the site, came upon some excellent recycling tips that bear repeating. 10 Tips for Successful Recycling Use a Blue Box for recycling. Not only is the Blue Box the symbol for recycling in Ontario, it also flags the driver to stop at your home. Have your Blue Box out by 8:00 a.m. Weather etc. might delay the driver but if your box is out by 8 a.m. you won't be missed! Place your Blue Box in a visible location. If you can see your Blue Box from the street so can the driver! Sort items if you use bags. Any overflow from your blue Box can be bagged if it is SORTED. Drivers will not sort through mixed … Read entire article »

Homemade Yogurt

The company that makes Activia yogurt and DanActive dairy drink will have to cough up $56 million US to settle a deceptive advertising charge and class-action suit related to the two products. Both the Federal Trade Commission, and a U.S. District Court found that the probiotics in Dannon's products were not beneficial enough for the company to claim that they would prevent colds or flu, nor relieve irregularity. While Dannon's ads said the benefits of its products were scientifically proven, the FTC found that Dannon's claims were scientifically proven to be false. "These types of misleading claims are enough to give consumers indigestion," said FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz. In order to settle the misleading advertising charge Dannon agreed to pay $21 million to the U.S. government. It's also prohibited from claiming that any … Read entire article »

The Gospel According to Nintendo

Dec

2010

First there was The Baby Boomers – children of returning World War 2 veterans who burst on the world as the peaceniks and revolutionaries of the 60's, then Bubble Babies (like myself) – born a decade later who entered the job market during the slowdowns and collapse of the late 70's and early 80's. The ME Generation of the 80's was followed by the 'lost souls' of Generations X and Y. Today's young adults are the Nintendo Generation, a whole sector of society born after the advent of Nintendo and raised in the 30 second – instant gratification world of MTV. A generation that is increasingly discarding the values of all the previous generations in favour of… what exactly? This might sound like one of those 'bread was a nickel' columns, but … Read entire article »

Canada to Become Penniless?

Dec

After 152 years it appears the venerable penny is about to go the way of the dodo bird. The Senate finance committee is recommending that the federal government remove the penny from circulation and that guidelines be established for rounding off purchase prices for cash-only transactions. The committee also recommends that production of the penny for circulation cease "as soon as practicable" with 12 months notice, until the copper is no longer considered legal tender. There have been repeated talks about getting rid of the penny as it is estimated that it costs the Royal Canadian Mint 1.8¢ to produce a 1¢ coin, even though the Royal Canadian Mint claims it costs only 0.8¢ to produce a penny. The Canadian penny costs at least $130 million annually to keep in circulation, estimates … Read entire article »

Ah ha! Winter has hit our area hard just lately! Last week the school buses ran only 2 of 5 days. This week started out with a couple days of closed schools, (and lots of roads)… My gal gets so busy playing with her LEGO and her Barbies, mini-Polly Pockets I have to sometimes remind her of some of the things we have to do- the boring stuff like shovel out the driveway, do dishes,… I'm fairly certain the arena opens for free public skating on snow days, but we've never ventured that far- call the town office and they'll let you know! When it's too blustery for the wee folk to stay outside for too long, but they want to go outside here are a couple ideas for them.  1) If the … Read entire article »

Snow Shovelling Is NOT For the Faint of Heart

Dec

2010

It's day whatever of many snowdays this winter, the kids are inside slowly (or not so slowly) coming down with a case of 'cabin fever' and you long to jump in the car and just drive – anywhere, even to the post office or market. Before you head out in the car there is that monstrous pile of white and wet stuff at the end of your driveway. And after a few days of being stuck in the house you are determined to clear a path to the street. Unless you have a neighbour with a 'John Deere Special' or a trusty snowblower, you are looking at some time spent on the business end of a snow shovel. Shovelling snow can be excellent exercise but unless you are in good shape it … Read entire article »

Food Drive Update

Dec

2010

The Teeswater and District Kinettes would like to say a great big THANK YOU to the people in and around Teeswater, and to the River Village CoOp Market for supporting their 3rd annual Food Drive for the Salvation Army in Wingham. Starting December 1, pre-packaged groceries were set up in-store for patrons to purchase. These groceries were purchased, case by case at sale prices. A $5.00 bag for example has closer to $10 -12 worth of dry goods if they'd been purchased at regular retail! The Salvation Army gets a bigger boost this way! We've had people take the bags to their own special Food Bank drive events, (ie. schools), and that's great too!! Shopping made easy! To date, we've made two deliveries to the Salvation Army with 12 – 14 bags … Read entire article »
