Best Management Practices Farm Tour
By: The Team (August 16, 2010)
The tour will take place on selected farms in the Walkerton area, in Bruce County on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Over the past 10 years, this area, more than any other, has heightened the awareness across Ontario of the importance of managing our water resources with the utmost of care! This tour will allow participants to view excellent on-farm projects that have improved manure storage, reduced nutrient run-off, or reduced livestock impact on waterways! Speakers will include: Brian Luinstra, Hydrogeologist, Drinking Water Source Protection; Andrew Barrie, Environmental Specialist, OMAFRA; Keith Reid, Soil Fertility Specialist, OMAFRA; and Brian Hall, Canola and Edible Bean Specialist, OMAFRA. A “soil pit” demonstration will be included in the tour and will focus on the interaction between soil water movement and soil nutrients. A cover crop demonstration of red clover, oats, and peas planted into wheat stubble will also be displayed. A tour of a chemical storage facility will also be included. This promises to be an excellent and highly educational tour! It will be a great opportunity to observe practical applications that protect water quality on the farm.Everyone is welcome!
Participants will meet at Formosa Lion’s Park, Council Road, Formosa at 10:00 a.m. Buses will be boarded and the tour will begin. A BBQ Lunch will take place at noon, back at Formosa Lion’s Park, courtesy of the Lions club. Cost for the lunch is $10.00. The tour will continue after lunch and will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
