On The Doorstep To The Future

It isn't very often you can say that your SECOND oldest finished college the same year your youngest graduated Kindergarten!

Today my wife and I had the pleasure of watching the Junior General taking that all important first step from Senior Kindergarten to Grade One and the ceremony at Hillcrest brought into perspective a few things that I may have either missed in the last year or filed away in the 'Not Gone But Forgotten' folder.

- First, though we may complain from time to time, Hillcrest does indeed have some very dedicated teachers and staff. The SK grad was impressive, right from the 'Pomp and Circumstance' promenade to the final melee at the cake and punch table! Hats off to Ms's Whynott and Alkinson  for putting together a fine ceremony.

- Anyone who thinks kids can't sing should have listened to the Grade One rendition of Louis Armstrong's 'Wonderful World'! Wonderful World is one of my alltime favourites, and with the well timed props the Grade Ones' did 'Satchmo' proud!

- Watching the slideshow, one of the parent volunteers commented about how you could easily tell which student was which from their baby pictures. It would be kind of fun to show the slideshow to these same students in 20 years and ask them for their impressions…

Every year a whole new batch of students stand on the doorstep to the future – College students leaving university, Grade 12's heading towards college, jobs, and some of the biggest changes in their lives, Grade 8's at Hillcrest heading towards F.E. Madill or WDSS in the fall, and even 5 and 6 year old heading towards the guinea pigs and tadpoles in Grade One.

To all the students heading towards new futures – CONGRATULATIONS!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!

To all the teachers taking a breather before starting a 'new batch' – THANK YOU!

To The Special Helpers – Miss's Debbie,  Annette and Marlene – we have come a LONG way this past year and I KNOW Sam wouldn't be where he is now without your help! THANK YOU!

And now…

SUMMER HOLIDAYS!

Mark W. Law has been a writing and journalism fanatic since he was first tagged to write a 3 act ’shadow play’ – in Grade 2! Originally from the wee hamlet of Oyster Bay, BC, Mark has worked in many parts of the world, including almost all of the Canadian provinces, the United States, Europe and even a sand-filled radio station in North Africa. During that time he has written for military and local newspapers, served as editor for a number of online magazines as well as publishing his own popular ezine for new writers and artists – The ThinWire Journal. Mark has also penned more than 100 poems and essays and is an internationally known digital artist. And for anyone who lived in Northern BC during the 1980’s and 1990’s, Mark was the ‘morning weatherman’ on CBC Radio.
