Klymene! It’s The Fifth Season!

KlymeneWe need a fifth season on the calendar.

I am fine with Spring (lovely time for taking pictures in the countryside), Summer (warm days on the beach at Kincardine), Autumn (the riot of colours here amazes me) and Winter (after a fashion as long as I don’t have to shovel it), but there is a distinct need for another season, sandwiched between Winter and Spring – a short season, say a month or so, beginning at the end of February and ending with the Equinox.

I even have a name for this *NEW* season – Klymene – after the Greek goddess of renown, fame and infamy – as in “HOLY KLYMENE THAT LIND CAN HIT!!” or “KLYMENE, CAN’T GILLIS SEND WELLWOOD TO THE MINORS???”. Yes, Klymene has a nice ring to it.

You see, this fifth season is that time of torn loyalties, when the Blue Jays hit the field in Dunedin full of spark and hope for the upcoming season while my Canucks (no comments about the Leafs) gear up for what we are constantly being told will be a deep playoff run.

Klymene is a season where rookie pitchers like Reidier Gonzalez toss extended scoreless innings in training camp just before being handed a bus ticket to Las Vegas (renown), under-rated centres like Hank Sedin quietly set team records in assists and points (fame) and over-paid centre fielders come down with mysterious ailments and injuries just prior to opening day (infamy).

But all is not about sports during Klymene, not by a long shot! Klymene is the season when Senators return to work (sort of) in Ottawa. Klymene is also the best time of year to make Habitant Soup, when the Stars are brightest in Texas, Coyotes come out of their dens to howl and the Leafs on the trees first Bud out green (with envy mostly). And of course at the end of Klymene Blue Jays fly north on their annual migration to Roger’s Centre. And every four years Klymene could be quite special, extended for a few weeks backward into February due to Olympic changes in the weather.

Today the conflict of Klymene begins, with the Canucks taking on Nashville in an afternoon tilt on Centre Ice while Sportsnet broadcasts its first training camp game. But the gods are taking it easy on me for a wee bit still – today’s baseball game is ONLY the Red Sox and Orioles.
