Let The Finger Pointing Begin
By: Mark W. Law (February 22, 2010)
This morning 33 million Canadians are sitting down to a hearty breakfast of crow.
After weeks of hyping the Canada – Russia Gold Medal Game as being ‘The Game of The Century’, Canadians are starting to realize that showing up for the Olympics does not guarantee podium spots – thanks to an upstart American hockey team. Coke may still be blasting those commercials about hockey being our game, but somewhere in there should be the message that the other hockey powers in the world have been better students of our game than we have been!
Today there will be plenty of finger pointing – should Luongo have been in the nets after the second goal, why is the ‘San Jose Line’ still together, why after a hat trick in the opener the Iginla-Crosby-Nash line was broken up, why Jonathon Toews is on the 3rd / 4th line? Really though, all of these questions are irrelevant if Team Canada’s veterans don’t start to show the leadership that they were chosen for. Or perhaps it is time to turn the helm over to the young Turks like Seabrook, Keith and Toews and let the Thornton’s and Prongers ride the end of the bench for a bit.
Tuesday the long road towards a chance at gold begins against Germany, who placed 11th in the round robin. On paper this seems like a no brainer. But then again nobody expected the U.S.A. (and Switzerland!) to expose the weaknesses in Team Canada with such ease.

Mark has also penned more than 100 poems and essays and is an internationally known digital artist.
