2010 – Live, Learn, Love

Dec

2010

It's been a helluva year – 2010 – but we survived! Tomorrow an article will 'magically' appear on the site with a partial list of the celebrities who passed through the veil in 2010. Must be some awesome jam sessions, writer's groups and cocktail parties going on in heaven, or wherever they passed on to. Even here in Teeswater it was one of those years. Someone said to me this week that 27 families lost a loved one in our area this last year. We were one of those families and even 10 months later I am still keep catching myself picking up the phone to ask for advice on a leaky faucet or just to say "Hello!". I suspect that will continue for some time to come – here and in … Read entire article »

Ho Ho Ho Hold Your Reindeer!

Dec

2010

Christmas is serious business to retailers, religion, and of course, children!  Depending on who you ask and when, the center of all the hoopla is either Jesus or Santa!  At the risk of offending everybody, I'll talk about the Great Red-suited Fellow!  I love Santa!  My child has never been a fan of the store-type 'Santa's helpers' however, and that's OK.  Some people even find the life-sized plastic figures set up in stores a bit 'creepy.' This time of year turns a lot of people into Santa's helpers as they are reminded to be kinder and more gentle to their fellow human beings.  A lovely example is 16 year-old Brandy Wind from the Kitchener area.  This gal has suffered with spina biffida all her life.  The last 3 years have mostly … Read entire article »

A Rare Triple Play

Dec
21
2010

Today is the Winter Solstice – the point where the nights start to get shorter and days longer. Today is also a rare 'triple play' – solstice, full moon and a lunar eclipse all happening within 24 hours of each other. The partial eclipse began at 1:33 a.m. Eastern, and the total eclipse lasted between 2:41 a.m and 3:53 a.m. The partial eclipse ended at 5:01 a.m. From the look of the pictures on the web this morning the eclipse was quite viewable on the east coast of North America, with a number of excellent shots from the Washington D.C. area. The full moon is not rare, occurring every 28 days or so. This month's full moon is called the 'Oak Moon' or 'Cold Moon'. More rare is the 'Blue Moon' which … Read entire article »

Don’t Be a Turkey – Safe Handling Your Holiday Bird

Dec
20
2010

This year we are having an extra special treat for Christmas – a fresh frozen turkey straight from the farm. Right now the turkey is happily snoozing in Carol's freezer but the trick will be getting it from the rock hard state to mouth-watering goodness on the table Saturday. So it is off to the experts for advice on how to best handle a frozen bird. Health Canada has an excellent site with lots of tips. First the gory bits. Thousands of Canadians will end up with food poisoning every year, a large percentage courtesy of Salmonella in improperly handled and cooked poultry. Avoiding a trip to the ER or several days of just plain feeling nasty is pretty straightforward and simple. But Health Canada warns it's not possible to tell if food … Read entire article »

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Dec

2010

The Good… 5 more shopping days til Christmas! Yaaaay… not just because once all the rushing about is done I get to hide out in my favourite place – the kitchen – and make the goodies I have been thinking about for the last few weeks, like Turkish Delight and Ginger Noodles, Shortbread and Ginger Snaps. But Christmas is also the time of year when I get to kick back for a couple days, eat too much, drink too much specialty coffee, maybe even a wee *sploosh* of Baileys after the kids are tucked in bed. And this year I am getting to indulge in a guilty pleasure I have contemplated for years. Might not be a biggy to many folks, but as reticent as I am to give up my Sunday morning … Read entire article »

A View of My Favourite Things

Dec
20
2010

Yikes!  Here we are just a sniff away from Christmas!  I look forward to some of the oddest things perhaps, but it's the odours that get me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside- not the spiked egg nog!  Besides, I really don't like store-bought egg nog! A week or two ahead; fresh pine tree to decorate, cookies baking Christmas eve; liver pate baking up for part of our smorgasbord supper, later on- candle wax at church, and later yet- the the fresh air walking up the hill home, (sobering for some!)  Christmas morning; fried onions and celery!  It's hard to work up an appetite for breakky but I sure look forward to the turkey and stuffing for supper!  A turkey roasting all day!  I think of my Mom who made the best … Read entire article »
