Making That List & Checking It Twice
23
Two days before Christmas – is your house a zoo yet? Hopefully by now you are down to the wrapping and organizing phase of Operation Happy Ho-Ho (I’m ex-military – does it show?) but if you are like myself there are still a couple more goodies to pick up for Xmas morning. And today may be just the right day to head on out and finish off your to-do list (or as my sister Pen says ‘The Honey-do List’) since our friends at Environment Canada are giving us a heads up that less than optimum weather is on its way for later tomorrow and Xmas Day. A fast moving Colorado Low that developed earlier this week over Arizona and Texas will dump up to 30 cm of wet and white stuff over … Read entire article »

Our House Is A Very Fine House
23
By Lynne Frank Our house is a very very fine house, with one dog in the yard,… Well, ours is not quite the typical gingerbread house this Christmas season! A week or two ago my 8 year old, Carly, and I decided to start our annual ‘gingerbread’ house. “But Mom, I really don’t like gingerbread.” So, I said that we’d just try peanut butter cookie dough. It’s soft after baking. “Cool Mom!” Then, the imaginative girl said “We sould make it to look like our house!” So, silly me, I agreed. This took all three of us to carve and assemble. Darren cut and set the cottage roof. Carly did most of the decorating, and I maybe got the bulk of the clean-up job! But it’s pretty cool overall. Merry Christmas! FYI – I called the … Read entire article »

The Days Get Longer From Here
21
As we start the last desperate push of Xmas shopping, fighting crowds, slippery roads and grumpy children some good news is beginning to peak over the horizon. Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and the official first day of Winter! The Winter Solstice occurs exactly when the earth’s axial tilt is farthest away from the sun at its maximum of 23° 26′. Though the Winter Solstice lasts an instant in time, the term is also colloquially used like Midwinter to refer to the day on which it occurs. Many cultures around the world traditionally celebrate the Winter Solstice: The Saami, indigenous people of Finland, Sweden and Norway, worship Beiwe, the sun-goddess of fertility and sanity. She travels through the sky in a structure made of reindeer bones with her … Read entire article »

Rice’ing to The Occasion

Making the Bennerific Chocolate Rice last night got me to thinking. Well, actually it was Ben suggesting that the dish might make a nice change for breakfast as well as a pretty decent snack or dessert. One of the things I noticed moving to Teeswater from the Wet Coast was that here potatoes rule the roost when it comes to dinner time. On the west coast menu you are as likely to see several varieties of rice side dishes as potatoes or pasta. Perhaps that relates to the large Asian population in Southwestern B.C. But in my mind, at least, potatoes and rice are almost interchangeable when preparing a side dish for dinner. But are they? A quick trip to Google / Wikipedia reveals some surprising facts about the wee grain from … Read entire article »

Sometimes an ‘Eureka!‘ moment in the kitchen happens when you least expect it! I love Rice Pudding. I also love Chocolate. Sadly, I have a lactose intolerant teenager in the house. Goodbye creamy Rice Pudding! Last night, after his hockey game, in which the MIGHTY Teeswater Bantam LL Otters trounced BCH 12 – 4 by the way!, Benner and I were scouting around the kitchen looking for something just a little unique, for a snack (watching Bantam hockey is hard work!). After discarding the usual PB&J sangies and microwave oatmeal we hit upon the idea of microwave Rice. And then in that Eureka moment we both said “CHOCOLATE!”. So here it is, a Teeswater.Ca Original Recipe for Bennerific Chocolate Rice, a quick, simple and surprisingly yummy snack / dessert. Bread Machine Cinnamon Buns
14
I like cooking from basic ingredients, none of this open a package and add water for me thank you very much. But I also love gadgets, which puts the bread machine at the top of the technology evolution ladder for me. This weekend I was casting about for a cinnamon bun recipe when I came across a delightfully easy one involving a bread machine that I just HAD to try out. The effort was minimal and the result was, well, in one day we have consumed 13 of the 14 buns, so it appears to be a winner! Recipe: Bread Machine Cinnamon buns Summary: quick, easy and delicious! Ingredients 1 cup milk 1 large egg 4 tablespoons butter or margarine 3 1/3 cups bread flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons active dry yeast or 1-1/2 teaspoons bread machine/ rapid … Read entire article »
