Provincial Junior Curling Comes to Teeswater

Here’s a great event to kick off the new year. Starting January 2, you don’t have to travel any farther than the Teeswater Agri-Curl to watch some great competitive curling.

Maybe you were glued to your television watching the Roar of the Rings from Edmonton a month ago. Teeswater is hosting what might be considered the Boom of the Brooms, the Pepsi 2010 Ontario Junior Men’s and the Ontario Junior Women’s Provincials.

Eight women’s and eight men’s teams will be competing for the top honours from Jan. 2 to Jan. 6, 2010. Last years’ Provincial winner, Rachel Homan’s rink from Ottawa, will back! Another rink is skipped by Carly Howard, Russ Howard’s daughter. Perhaps in four years or so we’ll be watching Rachel’s rink in the Roar of the Rings!

To give you another idea how serious the competition is, some of the teams have sent down their ‘vice’ to map the rocks here. Literally, this person throws each rock in the club. That’s 4 sheets of ice, 16 rocks each sheet,… The vice watches for balanced or wobbly stones, ice condition, and speed of each stone for example. One team sent their player in from Ottawa!

On the provincial level teams play the round robin format followed by 2nd and 3rd placed teams to semi, winner and 1st place team to final.

The Teeswater Curling Club will have the kitchen, and bar, open. The Ontario Curling Association won’t allow the TCC to charge admission, so first come, first seated! A few more volunteers would be greatly appreciated, especially if you have ever been a member of the TCC.
