2010 Top 10 Lists

happy-new-yearsTop 10 lists are kind of fun actually, like sneaking the last Toblerone triangle out of the package when no-one is looking.

Technically we won’t start the next decade of the millenium for another year but 2010 seems like a great place to start making lists for the years ahead. Hopefully not like the Soviet 5 year plans or Lee Iacocca’s list of the best things about K-Cars.

Here are my lists for the next year / years (Leafs fans take heart, I am sure you will win at least one Stanley Cup this millenium).

Top 10 Sports Wishes (in no particular order):

  • 1 Team willing to take Vernon Wells off our hands.
  • 2 CBC announcers who can actually pronounce B-I-E-K-S-A (extra points if they can spell Bouwmeester as well).
  • 3 decent centres for the Leafs (can we give you Wellwood back?).
  • 4 Solid starters for the Toronto Blue Jays.
  • 5 Gold Medals – (Men’s & Women’s Olympic Gold in Hockey, Junior World Championship in Hockey & Men’s and Women’s Olympic Curling Gold Medals)
  • 6 Game winning streak in April for the Leafs to ensure that Boston DOESN’T get the first pick from the Kessel trade.
  • 7 CANADIAN NHL Teams (Heck they could even rotate them through Hamilton, Winnipeg & Quebec City if they like).
  • 8 Game winning streak for the Canucks in April, which in the West is what it will probably take to MAKE the playoffs!
  • 9 Blue Jay wins against either the Red Sox or Yankees (winning record for the year…).
  • 10 Solid CFL franchises so we can truly call this our NATIONAL football league (Hello Halifax and Quebec City!).

Top 10 Environment Wishes (again no particular order):

  • Our leaders pulling their heads out of the tar-sands and being world leaders in reducing carbon emissions.
  • Viable non-fossil fuel transportation systems (Go Mag-Lev!)
  • A comprehensive world strategy for reducing carbon emissions that doesn’t just pay lip service to the third world
  • A ‘Eureka!’ moment for the ENTIRE world where people realize that Green Business makes economic sense!
  • Better Eco-friendly agricultural support products that ease world hunger without taking such a toll on the environment (and farmers!).
  • A paper-less world saving the 5 million trees a year we cut down in Canada to make… Post-it Notes? (see How Much Paper?)
  • Imagine if Canada had a ‘green’ party in power? (I am not officially endorsing the Green Party by the way…)
  • A better bio-fuel than corn.It just seems odd to me that we are burning food in our cars when people are going hungry.
  • More trains please! especially here in southwestern Ontario where they make sense vs. a lot of single occupant cars.
  • More recyclable products. It sure seems that I am tossing more in the bag for the dump than I should be.

Top 10 Local Wishes:

  • At least 3 more generations service from the renovated Teeswater Library
  • The new lift in the Town Hall so we can ALL enjoy the Christmas Concert in the theatre next year.
  • That all those people rocketing up Highway 4 realize Teeswater is an EXCELLENT place to stop.
  • Honey garlic sausages in the River Village Coop when I need them (strike that – Sandy has that one covered – Thanks!)
  • A hat-trick for every member of the Teeswater Bantam LL team and a shutout for Craig – against Wingham (betcha thought I would say Mildmay eh?)!
  • Time that could miraculously slow down on the weekend at 10 a.m. precisely so I can make the Breakfast Special at Laneys
  • A reliable map to ALL the local farmer’s markets and roadside stands in South Bruce – sure would save me a lot of time!
  • Drivers would remember there is a school zone on Hillcrest – gee that is scary sometimes
  • Walkers that remember there is a sidewalk on Janet – especially in the winter when it is a lil difficult to stop quickly
  • And last but not least – more sand, less salt please – these roads are nasty at minus 8.

Do you have a Top 10 list you would like to share? Well, head on over to the Contact page and let us know!

Mark W. Law has been a writing and journalism fanatic since he was first tagged to write a 3 act ’shadow play’ – in Grade 2! Originally from the wee hamlet of Oyster Bay, BC, Mark has worked in many parts of the world, including almost all of the Canadian provinces, the United States, Europe and even a sand-filled radio station in North Africa. During that time he has written for military and local newspapers, served as editor for a number of online magazines as well as publishing his own popular ezine for new writers and artists – The ThinWire Journal. Mark has also penned more than 100 poems and essays and is an internationally known digital artist. And for anyone who lived in Northern BC during the 1980’s and 1990’s, Mark was the ‘morning weatherman’ on CBC Radio.
