Interesting Times in ’09…

Happy New Years and All the Best in 2009!We’ve already heard all the doom and gloom that the banks say is ahead of us in 2009 (ironic considering that a lot of the problems with the world financial system started off with banks), but I am wondering if perhaps this ‘market correction’ we are living through might be a golden opportunity in disguise?

Just think…

- With travel dollars tighter than usual many Canadians will spend their holidays in Canada this year rather than heading to the United States or one of the other travel destinations around the world. As a result we will be able to actually visit those parts of our country that we have always heard about but never quite got around to visiting, like Peggy’s Cove or Algonquin Park or even a week camping at Saugeen Shores or on Manitoulin Island.

- With a sinking housing market we won’t be as likely to spend the next few months spiffying up (that’s a B.C. term so not sure if it works here)  the house to get it on the market in prime time. Instead we will have more time for enjoying the back deck or barbecuing (one of my favourite activities already!).

- With luxury money tighter than usual we will be less likely to upgrade the computer / High Definition TV / family car / etc. this year, which Mother Nature might thank us for down the road.

Yessiree, we know about all the gloom and doom ahead, but that glass is STILL half full and as my neighbour said this afternoon, “Maybe it will give us a chance to slow down and figure out what is REALLY important in our lives!”

And that might be the most positive news of 2009!

May the New Year bring you the peace, joy and fulfillment you most richly deserve!

Cheers!

Mark

Originally from the wee hamlet of Oyster Bay, BC, Mark has worked in many parts of the world, including almost all of the Canadian provinces, the United States, Europe and even a sand-filled radio station in North Africa. During that time he has written for military and local newspapers, served as editor for a number of online magazines as well as publishing his own popular ezine for new writers and artists – The ThinWire Journal. Mark has also penned more than 100 poems and essays and is an internationally known digital artist. And for anyone who lived in Northern BC during the 1980’s and 1990’s, Mark was the ‘morning weatherman’ on CBC Radio.
