You Like to Shop Locally! (Our Xmas Shopping Poll)

Dec

2008

In a resounding ‘YES’ vote for local shopping two-thirds of our poll respondents indicated that they would be Xmas shopping locally if at all possible!  Way to go Teeswater!  Slowly but surely we are starting to see businesses in town that cater to just about every shopping taste! 17% responded that their wife doesn’t trust them with Xmas shopping (aren’t Dads supposed to have a few new toys too?) or that they avoid shopping if at all possible (my kind of people…). With lean times ahead of us in 2009 I hope folks remember our local businesses. Supporting our local businesspeople makes our community stronger and leads to more and more businesses looking to setup in our town – like maybe a book store? or even some home based businesses considering making … Read entire article »

Interesting Times in ’09…

Dec

2008

We’ve already heard all the doom and gloom that the banks say is ahead of us in 2009 (ironic considering that a lot of the problems with the world financial system started off with banks), but I am wondering if perhaps this ‘market correction’ we are living through might be a golden opportunity in disguise? Just think… - With travel dollars tighter than usual many Canadians will spend their holidays in Canada this year rather than heading to the United States or one of the other travel destinations around the world. As a result we will be able to actually visit those parts of our country that we have always heard about but never quite got around to visiting, like Peggy’s Cove or Algonquin Park or even a week camping at Saugeen … Read entire article »

A Green Christmas…

Dec

2008

It all started with a message on my Grey-Bruce Freecycle group… “It seems that this christmas will be espescially tough for a lot of families, so mabey we could all post what sort of gifts we are HOPING to give our kids this christmas and perhaps we can all help each other… Let’s not get stressed out, it’s the most wonderfull time of the year:) -raycraft5″  These are tough times indeed, all over, with the bank meltdowns and car manufacturers in dire straits. And tough times are when Necessity, that mother of invention, reminds us of what is important and maybe not so important. Tweet … Read entire article »

Just Say No!

When was the last time you heard or saw a commercial that told you NOT to buy their product? In an interesting article on the Off The Grid website, Sir Martin Sorrell links our rabid appetite for new products, even when our old whatever is still highly functional, to climate change. Until a few years ago this kind of statement would have been from the realm of the Crunchy Granola Tree-Hugger Anti-Global Commerce types. But now with the cost of producing new products not only being measured in dollars and cents but also in terms of the energy requirements the notion that our over-consumption is directly affecting the climate is becoming mainstream. This statement is even more chilling given that Sir Martin Sorrell is the founder and CEO of WPP, the world’ … Read entire article »
