A Change in the Weather

How a month makes a BIG difference here in Teeswater!©2007+ Lori W. Law

A month ago it was warm and sunny – today it is a wee bit below freezing with a foot of the white stuff on the ground and the distinct threat of more tonight.  A month ago the mighty Canucks were mired in 12th place in the Western Conference (about where the Leafs are now after their winning streak…), this morning they are tied for 3rd in the league!

A month ago I was starting to think about what to get folks for Xmas, today I am, well, still thinking about what to get folks for Xmas.  It is a good thing the rest of the town is more on the ball.

The Santa Claus parade last week was an excellent example of what happens when a community comes together.  After two days of heavy snow the weather warmed up enough to let loose a deluge of rain just in time for the parade.  But did that stop the parade? NOT IN TEESWATER!  Children dressed like elves clumped through the puddles to hand out candy (Sam thanks you by the way!) and a steady procession of well decorated floats and firetrucks (another Sam favourite!) passed by our front porch.  A BIG tip of the hat to the organizers and participants, for the quality of your floats and presentations and especially for a fine parade under horrible conditions!

It was nice to see the business community come together to present the annual Teeswater Community Christmas Dinner!  A fine spread, with more than one of the Teeswater.ca elves heading back to the dessert table for a second round.  And by the looks of the pile of presents donated at the front door, the occasion was appreciated by everyone who attended.

Mrs. Teeswater.ca tells me that these sorts of events are common in small towns in Ontario, but they never cease to amaze me.  Even after living in a large number of cities and towns in my life (not to mention a fair amount of travelling) i think that Teeswater is onto something VERY good with these sorts of events.

So this holiday season, as you grouse about the slippery roads and whether you are going to be able to make a Leafs game or get to Walmart in Hanover, it is good to know that here in our small town lives some very unique ideas – good ones too – that we can share together without having to leave town for the brighter lights of elsewhere!

Happy Holidays!
